Nuevas relgas for Green Card
🛑 Recent changes to the Green Card: important alerts you should know abou
In 2025, U.S. immigration policies are undergoing a noticeable tightening. Individuals seeking to obtain Green Cards face new challenges, especially if they apply by marriage or other traditional routes.
One of the most troubling changes is the tightening of Green Card requirements for marriage. USCIS has updated the forms and increased the requirements. More proof of cohabitation, financial ties, and third party testimony are now required.
In addition, as of March 2025, the income threshold for sponsors has been raised, complicating the process for low-income families wishing to support a loved one.
As if that were not enough, some temporary stay programs, such as humanitarian parole for certain countries (Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua), will not be renewed, directly affecting thousands of applicants.

Who can still access the Green Card without so many restrictions?
Despite the new hurdles, there are still avenues for those who qualify under specific categories.
One of the most prominent is the EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) program, which allows highly qualified or advanced degree holders to obtain residency without the need for a sponsor. This benefit is designed for professionals whose work can benefit the country in key areas such as health, science or education.A proposal known as the “Trump Gold Card” has also emerged, which would grant direct citizenship to investors who inject $5 million into the U.S. economy. Although this measure is under evaluation, it reflects the economic and immigration direction that the current administration could take.
What to do if you are applying for your Green Card in 2025
If you have already started the process or are about to do so, it is important to be aware of the new editions of forms required by USCIS. For example:
- As of December 2024, a medical examination is required along with the Form I-485.
- As of February 2025, only the October 24, 2024 edition of Form I-485 will be accepted.
Failure to comply with these requirements may lead to rejections or delays. It is also crucial to stay informed about processing times, which can vary considerably:
- U.S. citizen spouse (in the U.S.): ~9.3 months.
- U.S. citizen spouse (outside the U.S.): ~14.3 months.
- Permanent resident spouse: up to 35 months.
In this context, consulting with an immigration lawyer is a smart and necessary decision.
Good news: relief available
for certain immigrants
It is not all obstacles. There are measures that are easing the burden for those already residing in the country. The Department of Homeland Security has established an automatic 18-month extension of work permits for certain applicants while their renewal is being processed.
This allows thousands of immigrants to continue working legally and contributing to the economy without interruption.
